Update: Sheldon Levy, the president of Ryerson University just released a letter harshly denouncing Thursday’s hazing.

Dear Ryerson Engineering Students,

One of the most effective first steps used to dehumanize people is to ask them to take off their clothes in the presence of fully dressed leaders. This practice is so effective it’s become a standard procedure in the military, prisons, gulags and the TSA. Luckily for air travellers, the humiliation only goes as far as a strip-search.

Commanding people to crawl on the ground is an effective technique that’s particularly favoured by the military and people in sadomasochist relationships. In the gulags they’d make people line up outside and stand naked in the snow. Regardless of their tactics militaries, prisons, gulags, gangs and the Ryerson University Engineering program have at least one thing in common- each has an established tradition of dehumanizing initiation rituals…

I was walking out of the Eaton Centre this afternoon, at Dundas Square, when I saw a group of Ryerson students run past in what first appeared to be some sort of a group prank. There were two distinct groups- those who were wearing coveralls with “Ryerson Engineering” logos on them, and another group who were wearing either their underwear or t-shirts and shorts.

It was quickly apparent that the students in the coveralls were in-charge. Some of those in coveralls were spraying super-sized squirt guns on the scantily dressed students, others were yelling commands at them like drill sergeants. While some of the students were having a great time, it was obvious that others weren’t. You could see the mix of anger, humiliation and cold on their faces (it was about +1 Celsius at the time).

I’ve been avoiding writing about Kevin Annett the past few weeks. The word is out, most reasonable people understand he’s a complete fraud (including his fraudulent claim to have discovered a mass grave in Brantford, Ontario), and he’s been putting out a lot of complete nonsense- only a fool would believe in Annett these days. Unfortunately there are many fools on our world, and it would be a herculean task to help each of them.

Annett is the guy who (with a few fools, and some professional con-men) created his own “Common Law Court” that he say’s have the legitimacy to issue (and act upon) arrest warrants to the Pope (both new-Pope & old-Pope), the Queen, the head of the RCMP, and a long list of other people. The best analogy for his court would be a group of kids in a schoolyard playground play acting Judge Judy, or perhaps re-enacting their parent’s divorce.

Porter Airlines is in the midst of a labour dispute. Their refuelling staff at Toronto’s Billy Bishop airport recently organized under COPE (Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union), contract negotiations have failed, and the workers have walked-out. Porter has trained alternate staff to do the refueller’s work and there have been no reported delays due to refuelling issues. So, the striking workers are in a difficult spot.

Last week militant labour unions rallied together in support of the Porter workers. There were a number of high-profile executives at the rally, led by Sid Ryan of the Ontario Federation of Labour. While executives often attended their rank & file were less enthusiastic to show, and less willing to get arrested for wildcat actions. The OFL’s solution was to bus in a group of anarchists who they would outsource the dirty work to.

I just read a fascinating article about Cheri DiNovo from 2008. One paragraph, in-particular, seems to explain a lot:

“DiNovo says she has no political ambitions (though in some circles, her name figures on any list of possible replacements for Howard Hampton, the NDP’s current leader). You might say she has street ambitions, growing from the conviction that the NDP needs to appeal to street-level voters who are disillusioned with the political system itself.”

Zach Ruiter and his merry band of anarchist pranksters came back to Toronto’s Davenport neighbourhood on Saturday afternoon. Their protest began in front of the GE-Hitachi nuclear fuel enrichment plant. The plant is located in what’s now a residential neighbourhood about three kilometres from downtown.

The awareness of the issue has now been raised, Torontonians are united, and more than one politician is working on a solution- speculation is that GE-Hitachi will be gone within the next five years. Outside of GE-Hitachi, there doesn’t seem to be any real opposition to forcing the plant to leave.

So what next? Well, now we move into the superfluous grandstanding phase- it’s time to take advantage of the victory for political or other gain. For Cheri DiNovo this means showing-up in front of the plant with a gang of police-hating anarchists and making a public speech. And this is where today’s story begins…

On Thursday the OCAP (Ontario Coalition Against Poverty) held a protest in the City of Toronto owned Metro Hall building. It was pretty much the same crowd who were at their City Hall protest a couple weeks back minus a few. Anarchist Mennonite Street Preacher Doug Hatlem Johnson was conspicuously absent, but John Clarke was there, as was Mark Brill, Jenny Peto as was her partner Lisa Schofield.

The protest was much the same as the one at City Hall. People had signs, there was chanting, people sitting on blankets and lots of media. But, there is one thing that was different- this time, late in the evening while the police were dragging OCAP members out of the building, an angry (and sadly misdirected) woman with a sharp object attempted to stab me…

There’s a labour dispute erupting at Porter Airlines. Porter staff who are responsible for refuelling the planes joined COPE (Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union) last August- since then, negotiations haven’t gone well. Porter offered its staff a 25% increase in their minimum hourly wage from $12.50 to $14.50. On January 10th Porter refuellers walked off the job. Porter had trained other staff and managers how to refuel the plane- according to their press statement, their training was the equivalent of what they teach new-hires. No flights were delayed.

Back in the days when people trusted their union executives, and felt genuine solidarity for their fellow workers the solution to this problem would have been easy. All they’d have to do is make a call for workers to show up and barricade the airport. If not enough workers showed, or they felt the need to be particularly forceful, the union executives would call-in their friends in the Mafia.

Sisters In Spirit: The Native Women’s Association of Canada’s Forgotten Missing (feat. Status of Women Canada & $10 million)

Back in 2005, under Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Liberal government, an agency called Status of Women Canada gave a $10 million grant to the Native Women’s Association of Canada. The money was earmarked for the NWAC’s Sisters in Spirit Initiative with the intention of building a national database of missing indigenous women & girls.

The project was very successful at raising awareness- right to the point where their rallying cry of 600 missing and murdered women was announced on the floor of parliament. Unfortunately, it appears there are significant questions about the integrity of their database- arguably the most important part of the project.
