Line 9 Protests Unmasked: Part II – Anarchists Dance With NGOs & Unions At The Watermelon Ball

nov-17-line-9-opirg-u-of-t

Introduction:

In Part I of Line 9 Protests Unmasked we explored the history of direct actions against Enbridge’s pipeline reversal from the original #SwampLine9 protest in 2013 to the most recent occupation of a construction site near Innerkip, Ontario. The protests started off with a bang but quickly faded out as the media and public started to realize the protests were all led by the same group of radical (and some violent) anarchists.

Here in Part II we’ll jump back in time a couple years to an important event held at the University of Toronto on November, 17, 2012. The speakers list at the “Tarsands Come To Toronto” brought together a star-studded lineup of environmental activists who travelled from across the country to discuss ways they can stop the reversal Line 9. Analysing this event not only gives great insight into the networks behind the fight against Line 9, but also provides us with a deeper understanding of their motivations.

One of the more common criticisms about the environmental movement is that many people and organizations motivations aren’t what they look like on the surface. A popular analogy is that of a watermelon- 10% green on the surface (representing environmentalism) with 90% red in the middle (socialism). Adding to that, the dark pits could represent Black Bloc militants.

But how realistic is the watermelon analogy? In today’s story we’ll experiment with some exciting new relationship mapping software to analyse the networks behind the movement. The results are now in and, though they’re exactly what most readers would expect, they’re still fascinating. They also bring up some new questions- for example, what’s Bolivia got to do with it?

Line 9 Activist Demonstrates The Inherent Dishonesty Of The Movement (Feat. Syed Hussan)

Yeah, right...

Yeah, right…

If you’ve been following this site for any length of time, you’re already aware of the dishonesty in “the movement”. Environmental activists have provided us with hundreds of examples of how they twist the truth and sometimes make up lies with no relation to it.

Hussan is a close partner of people at this week’s Line 9 protest, and spoke at rallies for last year’s Westover occupation. Last night he showed us another example of blatancy of their lies in a tweet attacking the Ontario Provincial Police. In the tweet Hussan claims that the OPP’s motivation for “so zealously going after” this week’s occupation because of a past donation Oxford County OPP received from Enbridge.

[UPDATED] Breaking News: Line 9 Protesters Served Injunction, Two Respond By Jumping Into “Badass Mode”

Update: It’s been confirmed that Dave Vasey, Trish Mills and Wolfgang Chapkro were arrested. Mills is currently on probation for last year’s protest.

An alert came out a short while ago that the OPP have delivered an injunction to the protesters who occupied an Enbridge construction site near Innerkip, Ontario. The protesters have been on site since Tuesday morning- complaining about perceived issues with Enbridge’s maintenance procedures while halting efforts to improve the pipeline.

Things haven’t gone so well for the Line 9 crowd during their last few occupations. In addition to not getting as much support as they’re used to, the media has cut-back their coverage of the protester’s antics. The problem was demonstrated this morning when Line 9 protesters sent an email asking their followers to contact the Toronto Star and ask why they’ve not been covering this week’s protest. (Perhaps they should reach out to Antonia Zerbias?)

So, when you’re a group of attention seeking anarchists and nobody’s paying attention, what next? The secret is to find some way to add some sparks to catch the world’s attention. Their solution? Simple, ask the OPP to make the sparks for them! At least two of the Line 9 protesters have jumped in to “badass mode”.

Idle No More Co-Founder Praises Zimbabwe Dictator Robert Mugabe’s Race Based Evictions

Nina Wilson Co-Founder of Idle No More

Nina Wilson Co-Founder of Idle No More

Nina Wilson is one of the more interesting characters to come out of Idle No More. She and two other women co-founded the movement with the intention of protesting federal government budged bill C-45. Shortly after INM’s launch, the founders were contacted by the David Suzuki Foundation who helped boost the movement into a ‘natural phenomenon’.

Wilson appeared to be one of the more sensible people at INM. When she noticed how her new “allies” in the social justice industry were collecting money for INM with zero transparency, she didn’t hesitate to speak out. Clayton Thomas-Muller of the union backed Defenders of The Land responded by telling Wilson to “check” herself. Shortly after, Wilson walked-away from the movement she helped to create.

But, as it turns out, Wilson may not be as palatable of an individual as she looks on the surface…

Line 9 Protests Unmasked: Part I – New Occupation, Same Old People & Tactics

Sakura Saunders distributing Envorinmental Defence's Line 9 posters at a March, 2013 anti-police march

Sakura Saunders distributing Environmental Defence’s Line 9 posters at a March, 2013 anti-police march

Introduction:

In November 2012 a group of leaders from NGOs, unions, academia, first nations and militant anarchist groups converged for a conference at the University of Toronto. Their goal was to come up with a strategy how to interfere with Enbridge’s plan to reverse their Line 9 pipeline- limiting Canada’s ability to export our oil to other countries.

The first evidence of their convergence began to emerge in early 2013 when activists in the anarchist community started to buzz on social media, and later carried Line 9 signs to their protests. In March anarchist Sakura Saunders was seen at a (horribly racist) anti-police march in West Toronto distributing signs printed by Environmental Defence- a registered charity currently being audited by the Canadian Revenue Agency for their political activities.

Oppenheimer Park: The Continuing Tale Of Mayor Gregor Robertson’s Peter Principle (Feat. Harsha Walia)

Some protesters stay in a traditional west coast Tipi

Some protesters stay in a traditional west coast Tipi

Almost exactly one year ago this site pondered if VISION Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson had showed signs of reaching his Peter Principle in his responses to militant protests. The anarchists ran wild last year; burning down a house, marching down the street with flaming torches, and criminally harassing a restaurant owner. Throughout this series of events, we saw little-to-no leadership from the police or city government.

This year has brought us new protests, and the continuing lack of leadership from Gregor Robertson. There weren’t any flaming torches at this year’s May Day parade; but one of their leaders openly encouraged violence against the police, the protesters took his advice, and the guy is still out on the streets. In fact, he’s now one of the public faces for a “homeless” tent city occupation of Oppenheimer Park.

The city recently gave the occupiers an ultimatum that they must leave, they responded by saying that they’re “on stolen native land” that they’re reclaiming. First Nations protester’s claims were quickly neutralized when leaders from their nations publicly declared the occupiers aren’t speaking for their communities. Yet somehow, despite the farce, (and potential for violence) the camp still exists today.

Liberal MP Hedy Fry’s Political Hackery Cheapens The Pro-Choice Debate (Feat. Jim Hillyer)

(click to expand, then click again)

Today’s article will be short and sweet, asking a simple question- does Vancouver Liberal MP Hedy Fry misunderstand the workings of democracy, or is she just a grandstanding political hack? This of course is a trick question, our political system eventually turns most of our representatives into hacks. And, unfortunately, this leaves many unabashed to twist the meaning of democracy for political gain.

Yesterday Fry made a posting on her Facebook page complaining about a poll Conservative MP Jim Hillyer included in his government funded flyer where he asked his constituents their opinion on his standing on abortion. Fry’s criticism was that Hillyer was “spending taxpayer’s dollars on this garbage”. Huh?

“Six Nations” Line 9 Occupation Ends With A Whimper…

Protests against Enbridge’s Line 9 pipeline reversal started with a bang when a group of militant anarchists (including a convicted G20 ringleader) occupied a pumping station in Westover, Ontario in 2013. The protests began to fizzle out after the first protest- first there were a series of 1-day occupations (with no arrests), and now the most recent occupation by “Six Nations” in North Dumfries.

The protesters sounded resolute at first, explaining how they planned to occupy the site, holding teach-ins and other activities. Things started getting quiet after the second day, and then all communications stopped on the third. It was a mystery, what happened to the intrepid protesters? Well, the mystery is now solved- the protest has ended with a whimper.

Six Nations HDI Director Calls Kathleen Wynne “Ballsy”, Elder Asks Where The Money Went

Does Kathleen Wynne Have Balls? Is she a coward? Something worse?

Was Kathleen Wynne “Ballsy”?

The small town of Caledonia, Ontario has been host to a lot of trouble in the past. If you’re not familiar with the story, the quick version is that a group of union backed radicals terrorized the town in response to a dodgy land dispute over a plot of land that was to be called Douglas Creek Estates. At the height of the conflict Caledonia residents were being required to carry ‘passes’ if the native protesters were to allow them to go to their homes. One resident was assaulted and now lives with brain damage.

At the end of the ruckus the province paid-off the developer, buying the land at a premium. One house had already been built, it’s reportedly still occupied by protesters. There was also a great big steel electrical tower; torn-down and placed as an unsightly, dangerous and illegal barrier to the road.

In June the Haldimand County Council voted to finally take-down the barrier. Six Nations radicals quickly warned that this action could start all out war. The council has backed-off, but the momentum hasn’t stopped- now, the radicals have announced plans to build a fence.
