Two weeks ago Toronto City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam tweeted out a picture of a hate-filled letter that was mailed to her office at City Hall. The envelope was postmarked on April 10th. It’s unknown when …

BC’s provincial election is coming up next month and the electioneering has begun to hit full swing- politicians are shaking hands, holding babies, raising money and working hard to get their final endorsements. Josh Steffler is an independent candidate for the Esquimalt-Royal Roads who has been following a similar path, with one exception- he’s running an ethical “no money” campaign, so he’s skipped the fundraising part. (We need to take all corporate/union money out of politics, this is good…)
The problem is that, without money, it can be very difficult for a politician to get their name out. So Steffler and his team of campaigners came up with a novel way to get some attention by soliciting an endorsement from the Sasquatch (a.k.a. Big Foot). Well, it didn’t quite go that way- but, they were certainly successful!

If you’re a regular reader you’ll probably remember my first interaction with Anonymous on February 13th. The genius who runs the @YourAnonNews Twitter account (w/1 million+ followers) tweeted that I like to try to get Canadian activists arrested on false charges. I explained to them they were mistaken, but the person running the account wasn’t up for discussion. This puzzled me, as I’d always been told that the people in Anonymous are in the world to make it a better place- not to be used as a tool for smearing people for political purposes.
I hadn’t thought much about it since then as nothing had come out of it but a nice bump in new readers- so, I looked at it as free publicity. Well, tonight @YourAnonNews has come on the radar once again, and I’m thankful to them for directing new readers in my direction. It appears that my article about Sakura Saunder’s cop baiting Barrick Gold protest has shaken-up a few feathers. It’s also taught me that I can’t automatically take people who self-identify as Anonymous seriously, not even if they have a million followers.

Wednesday was Barrick Gold‘s annual general meeting and, like previous years, Sakura Saunders and her merry band of anarchists came to protest. Barrick’s been having a hard time of things lately, between drops in the price of gold and some challenged project schedules their stock hasn’t been satisfying investors. So, it was sure to be a stressful day for Barrick’s executives.
Had only they known the comedic relief waiting outside they’d have had a great opportunity to unwind- there’s always a good laugh to be had when the Activistocrats put on a show. Besides the signs, the giant puppet of Peter Munk (with an uncomfortably large nose), the marching percussion band, and the presence of a prominent religious leader, the protesters were blessed with one of the most comedic of the obedience cult’s characters- Dee Shanger (a.k.a Captain Yarr) a growingly notorious cop baiter who think’s he’s a pirate.
Welcome to the world of the Canadian Socialist Obedience Cult…

UPDATE: The guy leading the chants in last weekend’s video (black hat, red jacket) shared a trailer and public address system with Sakura Saunders at last year’s May Day parade as they screamed out anti-capitalist chants. Follow this link for a video.

On Saturday Toronto celebrated 420 Day, one of the city’s most popular and faithfully attended events on the activist calendar. Unlike most of the events led by Toronto’s socialist obedience cults, 420 actually gets a big following- several thousand people came to Dundas Square to light-up joints and bongs together as the clock hit 4:20pm.
Outside of the hippies, the burners and the guy dressed-up as a bong, something strange happened. A small group of about 30-35 people from the socialist obedience cult community showed-up to celebrate the election of Nicolás Maduro, the new president of Venezuela. One guy even had a flag for the Communist Party of Canada. It was puzzling at first- why did they decided to show up to 420? Marijuana is still considered illegal in Venezuela.

Parks Board Chair Sarah Blyth- Half baked apology…
Update: I spoke with the media relations for the Parks Board at 4:30 and they told me that the motion would go ahead as planned. Now, there has been a change, and the proceedings will be held in-camera. This is what the City of Vancouver calls democracy?

Vancouver’s political Twitterverse has a become an increasingly nasty place. It’s become okay to insult, gang-up on others, and to throw unqualified accusations. Ad-hominem has become the norm. This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable in real life- most people accept that and act accordingly. So why is this happening online?
A motion slated to be discussed at the Vancouver Parks Board today brings one of the most prominent reasons to light- there are many people in leadership positions who are acting as bad examples to the rest of the community. A city that allows politicians, community leaders and even the head of an anti-bullying campaign to act nasty online will inevitably become a city with a toxic Twitterverse.
