Ron Plain- Can you tell this guy associates with anarchists?
On December 21st, 2011 members of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation partnered with members of Toronto’s anarchist community and setup a blockade of a CN Rail track. They claimed that the track was unauthorized to run over their territory so they had every right to block it. The blockade was rather controversial, as not only did it hurt CN Rail, but it also affected the credibility of Aamjiwnaang’s industrial park, putting them at risk of losing revenue from some valuable tenants.
CN went to court the next day and was able to secure an injunction, but the Sarnia police were reluctant to take action. The blockade was finally shut down on January 2nd after CN filed a suit against the blockade’s spokesman Ron Plain who now faces having to pay CN’s legal fees estimated to be at least $200,000. The radicals, as they do, claimed that this decision has resulted in the court “criminalizing dissent”.

Story from APTN…
On May 3rd a Native American activist from Bismarck North Dakota named Patricia Stein flew into Saskatoon. Like every other passenger on her plane, Stein was required to clear customs/immigration checks with an officer from the Canadian Border Services Agency. After a short interview she was directed to go to the waiting area for a secondary interview.
Stein has claimed she was stopped on the basis of racial profiling- because of her native heritage. According to a report on APTN, the second CBSA officer’s first question was to ask about her race. When she answered Stein says that the officer “literally had a pad of paper in front of him and wrote ‘Native American’ down and circled it.” He then began to question her on her work in the activist community and her connections to Idle No More. Sounds scary, doesn’t it?
Well, the story is scary, but not for the reasons one sees on the surface- if anything, we should be patting the CBSA officers on the back for a job well done. The scary part isn’t that Stein was selected for secondary screening- what should scare all Canadians is the reason why…

CUPE 2073 President Rob Chamberland longs for the days of the Haymarket Massacre…
Rob Chamberland is the president of the CUPE 2073, a Toronto based local for people who are hearing impaired. He’s an Anarcho-Syndicalist, a branch of anarchism/socialism that believes the future demands a violent revolution after which we should all be led by the unions. For most Canadians, this is the stuff that nightmares are made of.
One of Chamberland’s functions at CUPE (official, or assumed) has been to act as their online defender- put simply, he’s an Internet troll who regularly attacks and smears people who’ve said critical things about his union. Chamberland can be pretty good at it too, people who don’t understand his patterns often fall prey to his attacks.
Rob Chamberland is a very dangerous man- both for his union, and for society at large…

If you don’t, it’s time to re-read your history…
Anyone who saw the news about Wednesday night’s incident in Seattle is now aware it was May Day. The violence that occured reminds us that May Day originated out of a terrorist incident. It was 1886 when a group of unionists and police clashed in Chicago’s Haymarket square and someone threw a bomb into the crowd. Seven police officers and at least four civilians died. To many, this event marks the birth of America’s militant unionist movement.
This movement is still alive and well in modern Canada. And, despite over a century of our society’s evolution, there are people in places of power in Canada who look back at Haymarket though warm and (very) fuzzy lenses. May Day has become a magnet for those who want to engage in political violence. Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal have all been hit by this problem. Each has had it’s successes and failures- somewhere in between the three is a path to finding a sustainable solution.

The New Age retreat with the world’s highest concentration of fake Pulitzer nominees…
Hollyhock is arguably Canada’s most controversial New Age retreat. It’s set on a plot of land near the southern tip of Cortes Island in British Columbia, a sparsely populated place with only about 450 people in the off-season that at least doubles during the summer. It’s a mystical island with mind-blowing natural beauty- untouched beaches, grand old forests and a small town atmosphere that’s so hard to find in the modern world. To many (including myself) Cortes is a slice of Heaven on Earth- Hollyhock is a great place to visit. (Check-out my pictures)
There are a number of unique things about Cortes. First, there’s no presence of the police- perhaps connected to the fact there’s been an unsolved murder (and an eerie looking secluded landing strip). Next, and probably most important, Cortes has become a refuge for BC’s (and the world’s) power elite- residents include Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Eco-Lobbyist Joel Solomon of the TIDES Foundation, and Rex Weyler of Greenpeace.
And, there’s one very unique thing about Hollyhock- the retreat can probably boast having the highest concentration of fake Pulitzer prize nominees of any new age destination in the world…
